Seven questions to ask before choosing a German current account

A newcomer-focused comparison list covering fees, cards, cash, transfers, language support and identity checks.

Start with how you will use the account

The right Girokonto depends less on a welcome offer than on ordinary habits. Will your employer pay salary into it? Do you need a branch? How often will you deposit cash? Does your landlord collect rent by SEPA direct debit?

Ask these before applying

  1. What monthly fee applies, and can salary deposits reduce it?
  2. Which debit card is included, and where is it accepted?
  3. What does cash withdrawal cost outside the bank’s own network?
  4. Can you deposit notes, and at which locations?
  5. Which address and residence documents are accepted?
  6. Is customer support available in a language you can use for a disputed payment?
  7. What are the exchange and receiving fees for transfers connected to Thailand?

Keep evidence for larger transfers

If you move savings, retain statements showing their source and the transfer path. A bank can ask questions under its compliance duties. Clear records do not guarantee timing, but they make a legitimate transfer easier to explain.

Never share one-time passwords, PINs or full online-banking credentials with a relocation adviser. Account opening and bank decisions remain directly between you and the institution.

Keep your case specific. Rules and appointment practices change by city and personal status. Ask us to map your sequence.
